My Story...
I am Sandalu, the face behind Sandalu's Surf Academy. I grew up in Owakanda, a small town just 10 minutes away from Hikkaduwa. At 20 years old, I have already spent half my life on a surfboard and the last four years sharing that passion as a coach. I also compete in Sri Lankan surf comps, where I have taken three first place titles in the Junior division, and have proudly competed internationally in both the Maldives and India.
Growing up, I watched my dad, cousins, and uncles discover surfing by watching tourists surf the famous wave at 'Hikkaduwa Mainpoint', where no local had surfed before. They were in awe watching these foreigners ride waves on foam blocks. The first surfboard they brought back to the village was snapped in half, but they patched it up as best they could. Then about 10 boys lined up and took turns surfing the whitewash infront of my home. For them, it wasn't about the gear or how they looked, it was purely the stoke of riding a wave.
Today, I still carry that same energy into every surf session. I feel blessed to surf every day, it’s a big part of my daily rhythm, I can't imagine my life without it. My goal in my surf career is to share that same stoke and passion with every student I coach.
